How many calories have you burned today?

If crap weather burned more calories, I'd be in luck today. It was one of those rides where the ultimate goal was to avoid the frighteningly uncomfortable weather that the ominous black clouds spotted throughout the sky were sure to deliver. For the first two hours of the ride, luck was on our side. We managed to squeeze between multiple storm fronts.

But just as the Beatles tune 'Here Comes the Sun' began to play on my iPod, we turned the corner and were greeted by absolute darkness coupled with a wave of ice water. Great.

When i put my ride info into my new Calorie Burner Tool on the left side of my blog, it had no "weather" option to choose from. I wonder if crap weather really does burn more calories? I'd like to think so.

Goodmorning Christine,

As far as my knowledge goes, crappy (read: cold(er)) weather indeed cost more energie/burns more calories. Besides the regular effort your body has to deliver for training, it also must maintain a normal body temperature. So you burn more calories, simply because your body must create more heat, and that costs energie too.

But the weather in Belgium really sucks than, in comparisson to the (middle) part of Holland. Yesterday it never got over 10 degrees here (9 was the max i guess) but we didn't had any rain and had some sun from time to time. For today it doesn't look that bad too, again some sun and maybe only a small shower. Temperature will probably reach 11 degrees, not too bad.

End of the week it gets (much) warmer, 15-17 degrees! (Finally!) The downside is that there still will be some rain!

Almost starting to look like a weather report!

Good luck with the weather!

Cheers!

Michel

...peanut...i haven't posted w/ you in a while cuz i was put off by a statement you made & in fact, i had quite a reaction to it...truth is, your recent classics's reports were so good, i hadda come back & w/ your 'eva sport' vegan zaterdag coming up, perhaps this is the time...
...so i do hope you'll forgive me for bringing it up here...no animosity on my part & in support i'll reiterate my admiration for your decision to pick up to live & race in belgium...

...just to establish my dietary bona fides, i've been but i'm not now a vegetarian, never mind a vegan & yet i've eaten as carefully & organically as i could for close to 38 yrs...
...while simply enjoying healthy food over the years, i've explored the 'concept' of food...as an aside, i'm more into food combining these days & you may, better than most, appreciate what that entails...
...anyway, while most folks don't want to go the route of the vegan or even the vegetarian athlete, i certainly believe it can be done, if it's done properly...you & others have proven it for years...
...however, in the ctodd interview, regarding food, which i initially accepted, your statement that a vegan diet allowed you to train hard more often than meat eating teammates, became something i took issue with...
...in retrospect, i believe i understand the intent of your words but quite frankly, my reaction at the time was "why the fuck are you training more when you should be training harder...particularly in light of the nature of cross races"...

...either way, i'm not out to point fingers, we're all of us, always learning (hopefully), & if i show any concern, it's only because i'm an honest supporter of women's bicycle racing...

...good luck on zaterdag, kiddo, & keep up the interesting race reports...that kinda stuff is why i prefer pez to v-or-c news...bit a the personal touch...
...see ya...

I have 115 miles planned on Friday, the weather is set to turn cold/wet by then, but hey this is England who knows Friday could turn out to be our 'SUMMER', they can't predict it!

But i'd love to see what the calorie counter shows for that one!

Oh yeah... and "Here comes the sun"... how Ironic. I'm convinced those iPod thingies 'random' selection isn't quite as random as they'd have you believe!

Heard on the news today that approximately 1 million Americans are vegan. Who knew.

But, most of them were concentrated in the People's Republics of Berkeley and Cambridge ; ).

Tuesday's weather was why I ran at the gym on a dreadmill - I can't believe you were out in it! I'm convinced there must be some extra calorie burn for bad weather conditions.

Christine: I know I posted it before but I hope your talk goes well.

Amy: I hope you get a chance to write a breif report (in English) for [us and] your sister.

I too hadn't posted on your blog in a while. I imagine this was upsetting, both to you and your readers. I want you to know that it had nothing to do with disapproval of statements you made in an interview. I was just busy doing things.

Sorry i haven't responded in a while to all the comments on this blog entry.
I'll have you know that the weather has finally shown some promise - if i squint real hard as i look in the mirror I almost appear to have a tan.
THanks for your well wishes on my talk saturday! I really appreciate it!
And BGW, thanks for coming back to the blog and accepting that we all are entitled to talk about our experiences.

6967 calories for me today...

a slow ride for me today due mostly to the serious (35mph) head wind for the 25 coastal miles of my route, still rather than a [sun]tan I have a nice rosy glow to my cheeks and tan lines on my legs through wind burn!

hey chr15: You better get to eating before you blow off the clifside as you ride along the coast on your next ride!7,000 calories is a lot! How many hours?

Ha, no chance of me getting blown off the cliffside!

8 hours, the calories come from not time or speed but hauling my 190lb (I know... I'm working on it) backside around!

Wow, so having extra weight is the key to burning more calories. Maybe i'll give it a try!

Ha!
Sounds a bit 'chicken and egg' but I guess that is the crux of it!
